This was the first Portfolio Show I've been to for AiW and I really enjoyed it. I've been to Portfolio Shows before, including been in two. I especially enjoyed talking to them about how excited they were and how happy they were with their products. Portfolio Shows are always so interesting to go to, because with all the ideas the graduates have you can always gain your own ideas from looking at theirs and I find that to be really fun. I really liked how I got to see this time the employers go around to the different graduates and speak to them and hopefully give them a job at their company.
I really liked Katie Dierkes’ portfolio - it flowed well, it matched well, and it really showed her personality, which I found was very bubbly and perky! She loved what she did and I asked what she really wanted to get into after AiW, and she said she loved packaging design and patterns so she really hoped to one day own her own business. I thought her logo was very sophisticated and quite lovely, and I could feel that’s the look that she was looking for. Her business card flows well with her concepts as well. I remember seeing her Lollisweets Candies too during my 3D Class with Mr. Sordoni and thinking how neat it was and when I got to come up with my own candy bar logo in my Computer Illustration class I remembered her idea and created my own but with that ‘cute’ feel she had. I grabbed her business card because she intrigued me to keep watch and see if she comes up in package design in the near future.
I also really found the interior design portfolio area interesting. There was one block that was pretty visual. Her name was Gloria Jones and I found her presentation of the area she had was neutral but very eye grabbing with how she designed it, and that within itself say something due to her major. I wasn’t as impressed with her business card though, but if she partnered with a Graphics major, maybe she could come up with a more visually appealing one.
Another Graphic Designer that I found really interesting was Fitzroy Murray. I didn’t speak to him much but I got to look at his business card and his was very appealing to me too. Basic, but the line usage was continuous and I really enjoyed it.
I found a package design that was very fun – Y’alls BBQ sauce. I thought they all flowed well together, considering he came up with different kinds and then different color scheme with each.
I remember seeing Francelyn Fernandez’s area, and it was cool to put a face to the ‘Skip a Lunch Fee a Bunch’ poster and postcards. Her presentation was very eye catching too because she had a color scheme throughout her whole area and it was set up very nicely with the stands on the wall and her books. Next to hers, I also saw a few skateboard designs and I thought that that was very out of the box for a design and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how expanding outside a comfort zone was the thing to do.
